WHERE IS GÖMEÇ?
Gömeç, one of Balıkesir’s Aegean coastal districts, is on the İzmir-Çanakkale Road, between Burhaniye and Ayvalık districts. Located 550 km from Istanbul, Gömeç is located 170 km north of İzmir and 120 km west of Balıkesir city center.
HOW TO GET TO GÖMEÇ?
Those who want to come to Gömeç by road can reach Çanakkale-İzmir road. Those coming from Balıkesir direction can reach Gomec after İvrindi, Havran and Burhaniye respectively. It is 120 km from the city center. It is possible to reach Balıkesir center by train, and from here, it can be reached by city buses going to Ayvalık direction. Transportation by air is also possible.
Domestic and international flights are organized to Edremit Koca Seyit Airport, the closest airport. The airport is only 25 km from the district center. It is also possible to rent a car from the area.
THE HISTORY OF THE MORNING
If we need to give some information about the history of Gömeç, who took his name from the honeycomb; Gömeç, whose oldest known name was Passawanda, later took the name Kisthene. Who first lived here is difficult, but the findings take us back to the Early Bronze Age.
So, we can easily say that it is a very old settlement. The first traces of settlement are encountered in the area where Kızçiftliği Mound is located on the sea shore. There are many traces of historical settlements in different parts of the district. The famous historian Strabon from Amasya states that there is a temple belonging to Aphrodite on the nose named Pyrrha, but today no trace of it has been found.
After the region, which has been under the domination of different civilizations for centuries, was under Ottoman rule, the first settlement was established with the name “Ağaköy” in Balıbahçe, 1 kilometer west of today’s district center. Then it moved to its present location.
In the center of the region known as Armutova at that time, beekeeping was carried out intensely, although the whole region was called Armutova, but the center was called Gomec, meaning “honeycomb”.
